I have always loved learning about outer space as a child. I would always beg my parents to take me to the local college where they had astronomy seminars and workshops. I was especially mesmerized by the moon. I always appreciated the calmness and beauty of it. So, of course when I heard there was going to be an exhibit on the MOON in Toronto, I just had to go!

According to Aga Khan Museum’s website:
“Since the dawn of civilization, the moon has captivated cultures. To mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, The Moon: A Voyage Through Time explores our enduring fascination with this enchanting orb in the sky and looks at the role it has played in faith, science, and the arts across the Muslim world and beyond. Interactive devices, displays, and installations invite us to observe and imagine the moon in new ways.”

A highlight of the exhibition is Moon, a giant sculpture connecting the Museum’s first and second floors. Created by contemporary British artist Luke Jerram, the internally illuminated replica moon features detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface, includes a sound composition by BAFTA-winning composer Dan Jones, and measures five metres in diameter – to get an idea of scale, it would take 40 people standing shoulder to shoulder to circle the sculpture.

In addition to the beautiful Moon sculpture, there are tons of other fabulous pieces of artwork from prestigious international institutions, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland; Columbia University Libraries, New York City; Farjam Foundation, London; Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge; Morgan Library and Museum, New York City; Museum of the History of Science, Oxford; National Museum of World Culture, Amsterdam; Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto; University of Michigan Library, Ann Arbor; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and Wereldmuseum (World Museum), Rotterdam.
I absolutely loved this exhibit and exploring all the artwork and highly recommend it to everyone! The exhibit is on from Mar 09, 2019 – Aug 18, 2019 so there’s plenty of time to go explore. I’m hoping to go one more time to get another glance of the beautiful Moon sculpture.
